I'm writing about Japanese culture for a teacher (:) fun freelance job!) and I need to know the Japanese word for sushi bar and I can't find it. Please help me out before late Sunday!
I'm gonna go with "Sushiya-san" (寿司屋さん). Of course you can drop the "san" too. "-ya" added to a lot of things makes it a store, for example "Honya" is the bookstore, "Panya" is the bakery, etc. I don't know if there are different names for the different types of sushi places though because there can be levels. At the economical level, we have the "Kaitenzushi" places where it goes around on the conveyor belt, and at the high end are sushi bars where you literally have to be invited by someone who knows someone who gets people in there. Kooky...
Thank you! :) This is exactly what I needed to know (I wrote about the conveyor belt sushi, too). That's weird about the super exclusive places. I was looking for the most expensive sushi, and it's not even in Japan--it's in NY! $300 just to get into the place and $800 for a set. Okaaaay...
