I just sent my five year old Chilean goddaughter, Vania, a Viewmaster and some Disney picture reels for her Christmas present. I liked this idea a lot because it doesn't require that the child know English, it doesn't require electricity or batteries, she can easily share it with her sisters, it's inexpensive and lightweight (which are good things ( Read more... )

i agree.

i have sponsored through CI for two years now with two different girls. when one was abandoned by her mother (her only parent left) and had to be moved to cousin's of hers i was notified. i really appreciated that.

i've had nothing but a great experience with CI and have felt that i've really got to know the children i sponser.

Thanks for the information (I was the person who asked about sponsor organizations). I've heard other good things about Children International elsewhere too. I'll loook into it more and I'll be sure to let you all know when I decide and get a sponsorship child!

Great post; CI sound fantastic!

As this is an international forum can I just stress that it's World Vision US that pushes christianity, but not necessarily all of their offices.

World Vision Australia are very much anti-evangelicism (is that a word?!) and don't push their religion in any way, shape, or form.

As a WV staff member over here it's a criticism I get far too often and it's starting to bug me!! haha.

I noticed you've sent your child a scarf.. Whenever I've looked into any reliable source of mail to like Ecuador or Colombia (for anything even light I'd want to send) the postage costs listed were over $100. Since you're with CI too, I wanted to know what you did and how you did it. I know that you have to send to the CI location where your child is, but yeah, I don't know an easy or inexpensive way to do that. I'd love to know how you went about it and what kind of method of post you used. Thanks!

Parcel Post. It usually comes in around $40 and takes roughly six weeks to arrive at the field office.

Cool. I wonder if Global Priority would work with a flat rate envelope. Hmm. :) I'll have to see if those locations accept Global Priority. Otherwise I'll probably do parcel post.

Also: Is it normal to be considered a child's 'godmother'. One of my children calls me 'madrina' (the word for godmother in Spanish). I'm not religious whatsoever, so I feel somewhat awkward and don't really say anything about that. Even not being religious though, it's kind of a sweet thing if I'm some kind of 'mother' to her.

There isn't really a word in Spanish for "sponsor", so they substitute the closest thing their culture has, which is "godmother".

If it makes you feel better, slap the word "fairy" in front of it. I somehow doubt that Cinderella's fairy godmother was a devout Christian - just a little too witchy, ya know? ;-)

Hehe. Yeah, I guess so, but I have always written 'patrocinadora' for sponsor. I guess she could be substituting that and thinking more like sponsor. Although 'Madrina [my name]' sounds more like maybe she means godmother.. Haha, well, I guess I can only speculate.
