I very rarely get sick anymore these days. I honestly don't have time to be sick. 15 days ago I came down with what last week turned out to be a flu-like viral infection. I stayed in bed for days last week, including t-day, which was fine with me. I felt better on friday and went to work at Lucky 13. I was worse again saturday. I am still sick. I ( Read more... )

Gargling with warm salt water as often as possible helps a little bit.
And unfortunately, sleeping as much as possible helps too.
Sweating usually speeds up healing for me too, but not exercise, maybe a sauna or hot bath or as many blankets and sweaters as possible!!

I think I've had the same thing, though not quite as bad. I even got a flu shot this year.
I somehow managed to teach most of my classes by drinking a whole bunch of Twining's lemon ginger herbal tea (warm, not hot, with some sugar and a dash of brandy to stop coughing. Small amounts of alcohol have a cough suppressing effect, I swear.) and gargling with a mixture of half warm water and half hydrogren peroxide with a dash of salt. The peroxide is kind of gross- it will make your mouth foam a little- but it's an antiseptic. Just don't swallow it. Chloraseptic can be bad because the numbing effect masks the symptoms just long enough for you to do damage, and then you end up with even more throat pain. Also!- try slippery elm. You should be able to get it in tea or lozenge form at a health food store. (They might have the tea at the Vitamin Shop in SoHo). It tastes strange, but IIRC works really well. Feel better!

its revolting but my mom used to make me gargle salt water every few hours when I had a bad sore throat, it made it a bit better but also limited the chance of infections developing. There is also this throat coat herbal tea that's worked for me :)

Some folks may not agree with me, but one thing that people overlook is mucus. Trickling down the back of your throat, it triggers a cough reflex by design so that you will bring it back up, preventing it from collecting in the lungs.

Now, what's interesting that while it's banned here in the US< over in Europe you can actually have the mucus membranes in your sinuses surgically removed. It pretty much stops that post nasal drip and all of the attendant coughing ( ... )
