you don't have to be a ____ to enjoy ____

is one of my least-favorite review conventions. Because it's always about the othering. You know, like "You don't have to be a black lesbian to enjoy the films of Cheryl Dunye." The writer is essentially saying I, A NORMAL PERSON, JUST DISCOVERED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE TO RELATE TO THE HUMAN CONDITION! Nobody ever says this ( Read more... )

behind the curve, someone is wrong on the internets (me), public, douchebags, someone is wrong on the internets, movies, easy lulz

That IS a lot coming from you. I will consider myself forewarned (and probably follow it up with Austin Powers or something).

"Hey! Guess what, you guys?? You don't have to be an international spy to enjoy car chases, large explosions, and global intrigue!"

*giggling* Too true.

I just watched this one a few weeks ago. While I wouldn't call it enjoyable, it was a worthwhile film to watch. I think that even more than being about abortion, it is about the lengths that we go to to support those who are important to us. The subplot of the relationship between the two female leads was the most compelling part of the story for me.

Your comprehension of reality is overwhelming. Then again, my mom and I watch Brokeback Mountain over and over again because we love it.

1.oh, yes, i saw that movie in the theater with my mom. Very depressing. Amazingly good.

2. Your commentary reminds me of the time i went to see the movie "waking life" in the theater. There were a handful of straight young white hipster guys next to us (which were TOTALLY the target audience for this film). When a trailer came on for some movie with a gay protagonist, one of the SYWHG's said very loudly "that movie is SOOO target market!". At no point did it occur to him that, in fact, the movie he'd come to see was at least as target market as the gay movie, it's just he happened to be the target market. Here's where i roll my eyes.
