is one of my least-favorite review conventions. Because it's always about the othering. You know, like "You don't have to be a black lesbian to enjoy the films of Cheryl Dunye." The writer is essentially saying I, A NORMAL PERSON, JUST DISCOVERED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE TO RELATE TO THE HUMAN CONDITION! Nobody ever says this

2. Your commentary reminds me of the time i went to see the movie "waking life" in the theater. There were a handful of straight young white hipster guys next to us (which were TOTALLY the target audience for this film). When a trailer came on for some movie with a gay protagonist, one of the SYWHG's said very loudly "that movie is SOOO target market!". At no point did it occur to him that, in fact, the movie he'd come to see was at least as target market as the gay movie, it's just he happened to be the target market. Here's where i roll my eyes.
