[It's been interesting, riding with two people on one bird Pokemon. They couldn't go quite as fast as normal but it's still better than walking.

They've had to stop to set up camp for the night, though, and Gus can be seen making notes in his breeder's notebook, Luxray sleeping next to him and Juliet, now an Infernape I can math, really, dozing ( Read more... )

How close are you to Violet City?

[Gus is surprised, but Shawn already knows better with Abby no where in sight. He slips down to hand the gear over to Gus, who just takes it. He's gotten as accustomed to THIS Shawn's antics as he is his human friend.]

We're on the road to Cherrygrove to pick someone up. We just left Violet a couple days ago.

The Violet City gym has the HM you want.

An unfortunate turn of fate, isn't it.

More like poor planning in my case. It's easier to make them fight when it's a video game, but I haven't really felt right doing it now that it's... you know, real.

[Silence at first. His voice softens.]

That's true. It takes on a different perspective this way.

If you can think of them more as your teammates, relying on your leadership for the sake of a common goal... I think that helps. Most of them seem to want to support their trainer's quest.

Never thought about it that way either. Kind of ironic since that seems to be the whole point of the starter Pokemon in the games.

it is. And it seems more like a competitive sport to them than fighting.

Okay, that's another good point. Two for two. Maybe Abby will see it that way...

[That's right. He's totally whipped. One of his main concerns? Abby won't approve, not that he blames her. He's an advocate for animal rights, but Pokemon are sort of... different, and Mamoru raises good points.]

I can't speak for this Abby. But I do know that the Pokémon understand our language-- in spite of our inability to understand theirs. Even on an individual basis, finding out whether they want to participate... isn't impossible.

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice. What about you, do notice many of yours liking it? [Researcher, kind of curious by nature about anything related to psychology, or really the medical and technological field especially safes.]

Mmh... [This is the pause of a man who is deciding how to delicately phrase himself. There's a smile audible in his tone.]

Some of them are more motivated towards self-betterment than others. But the less motivated one has the misfortune of also being proud. So I think they all want to try hard for their own reasons.

... Sounds like someone I know. [His tone is both dry and amused, but mostly dry, he can't help it. Shawn. The Pokemon. And not his Ambipom for once.]

Sounds about right. They're intelligent, sentient even, it makes sense that they'd all have their own personalities.

It does. So I can appreciate the possibility that some of them may not want to fight. But I'm yet to come across such a Pokémon myself. Have you?

[He makes the switch after a moment, and the camera pans up to the Infernape draped along the branch above like a house cat on a window ledge.]

Juliet, my Infernape. She fights, but she's never been too fond of it. She seems to like it less now, which is kind of ironic given her type and species. Most of the others seem to enjoy it for different reasons. Especially my Dodrio and Ambipom.

[And you may be granted a brief look of genuine surprise, followed by amused contentment. Such a Pokémon reminds him of a certain friend of his.]

Interesting. Then some of them really are pacifistic. I hope she doesn't have to fight too often.

Only when she wants to, or if it's an emergency. Most of her battles have been completely voluntary.[But even if just by definition there aren't many of those.] I'm sure she'd appreciate the concern.

[People with manners, Gus has been meeting a lot more of them since coming to Johto than he did back home, outside of his primary work place.]
