On Call work

The Gibbon is frequently called at 2am by his work when things go wrong. The coworkers of The Gibbon claim that their allowance scheme for on-call is lacking. Recent conversation with Senior Management(tm) ended with a request for anecdotal evidence, as senior management is not prepared to gather impartial evidence themselves ( Read more... )

Overtime? On-call money?

*peals of slightly hysterical laughter*

Back in the days when I worked for The Place With The List Of Boats, we didn't get paid for the first hour's overtime but got paid at (from memory) time and a half after that. Our department had no need for people to be on call, thankfully.

rotwang's place wouldn't know overtime if it fell over it, but also has no official on-call requirement -- which doesn't stop him dealing with clients out-of-core-hours on a moderately regular basis. I think they work an unofficial flexitime, in that because he tends to work long hours anyhow, it's usually not going to be an issue if he wants to knock off early one day.

I'm never on call when not at work, but I've been known on occasion to answer email questions if I'm on holiday for more than a couple of days at a time. I don't get paid for that, although in theory I could claim it as flexitime.

my contract states overtime at time-and-a-half mon-fri and double-time for weekends and bank holidays etc.

more similar to you would be our officials, who if they have to work more than their basic number of hours (they don't have fixed hours) receive time off in lieu

they tend not to get 2am calls, but last orders when musos have been chatting down the pub is a prime time

I get time in lieu (academia).

In London, working for a private contractor, I got overtime at time and a half, even as full time employee. When they stopped paying us to do overtime in a cost cutting exercise, we all worked to rule. And you can imagine how nasty that got.

I answer calls from work outside work hours, including early mornings, late nights (although not usually between 12pm and 7am, since whilst my job is time critical it isn't that time critical), weekends and bank holidays.

I don't get payment or time off in lieu for overtime and work quite a lot of it.
