The spark was immediate, and Daniel knew that even if he had not been forced to go back to Earth and on the quest to search for his then wife, he would have followed her anywhere. And as she stood in her dress blues, speaking about the programs progresses, he thought about the first impressions of the then Captain Samantha Carter, something he did not dare to dwell on often.

After meeting Sam and having the most intellectual conversation he had had in about a year, Daniel could not help but be drawn to her. That evening, with Sha’re by his side - Daniel paused and thanked the heavens for letting him find her for even a short time - he had tried to test how far her vast knowledge went, following the twists and turns in the conversation with sudden vigor and eagerness. He remembered, with a smile, that Sha’re had tried to get them to slow down, she did not mind it was all in English but wanted to follow the conversation, and Jack simply going off to visit with the children.

It seemed as if there was no matching her intellect. She knew astrophysics and quantum theorems that made his head ache as he tried to understand them. He knew the mere fact he was trying to understand them impressed her. He explained all about the history of the pyramids, she explained the positioning. He told her about the religious significant of the tombs, she fired back to the astronomical charting. He had cracked the gate open; she had made it spin.

Even early on they were ying and yang, two peas in the scientific pod. It did not matter that they were in different fields; the fact they kept up with each other, catching the thought and running to the logical conclusion before anyone else had gotten the question, made them inseparable.

Daniel snapped out of his reverie as Sam sat beside him.

“A penny for your thoughts,” she said, turning the chair toward him, watching the other people float to the food table on the side of the lecture hall.

“I’ll give them for free. Just thinking how this all started,” he said. Seeing her quizzical look, he chuckled. “Us. How we first met and became friends.”

“You know, it may be odd, but I forget that we haven’t always known each other.”

“I know what you mean. After 10 years I can’t really think of a time you were not there,” Daniel said, placing a hand on her arm. “So that’s my thoughts.”

They shared a smile and sat beside each other for a moment longer.

Two friends, teammates, soul mates and scientists, remembering their first adventures together, were still sitting together long after the hall emptied.
