i remember being so excited when we saw our first chipmunk in the backyard. well, now we are sure there are at least two; one that knows how to get into the bird feeder without even pausing, and one that does not. the one that does not is lighter, blonder, and has reddish patches on her butt (of course, we don't know it's a 'her', but we've taken ( Read more... )

Growing up my Gram would rent a cottage for a couple of weeks in the summer. She and I would go out and sit on a big ole' rock in the front yard and feed the chippies. They would come right over and take the peanuts from our hands, I'd be able to pet them. Cute little buggers. On the other hand my cat Figgaro, feels they should be wiped from the face of the earth, and he's got the claws to do it. LoL

i used to pet them at campsites before people started freaking out about rabies and animal bite danger in general. i probably won't work up to petting this one; i don't have that kind of time. but if i get the time to go out there and read once in a while, she may come up and eat near me. :)

We regularly saw chipmunks storing food under the stairs of the cabin next to ours.
One day, a bear showed up and tore up some of the stairs in a flash. (Granted, they were rather old, probably partly rotten.) Had a nice snack.
When I opened the door and started clapping, it ran.

they're ridiculous how much they store food. all that sunflower seed they've taken is likely planted all over my garden again. *sigh*

Somewhere between 1/2 and 9/10 ends up forgotten, depending on the hoarder.
Really interested in the scrub jay experiment - hiding things in the room they didn't get breakfast.
