I love the Good Earth..especially that end. It seems like such a caricature of life, but it could be a real life. Such high highs and low lows make for an amazing story. I couldn't stand the part where he goes and acquires a whore. His wife is the absolute best woman (O-lan, right?) ..asking her to oil her hair and try to be pretty was so heartbreaking. She birthed her children ALONE in a shitty hut for god's sake... A hut where the worth of a single extra tea leaf was something to argue about. There are so many lessons about humility to take from that book. It made me feel like a good person at the end because I felt so moral for sympathizing with the 'right' people. haha ( ... )

Coffee IS a plague... but I think the downfall of America will be brought around by value meals and free refills. There's your obesity factor right there.
