Yeah, I've always viewed the lyrics to have just a little dark twinge on them (it's Sondheim and the character who sings it sucks at relationships), but I think what he meant was insulting and blatantly hurtful language. I mean, if you're having a problem with someone you love you should talk it out, but not, ya know, in a mean way.
True. For some reason I believe that if two people care about one another, whether platonically or romantically, talking to one another, and more important, listening to one another, can solve their problems.
