Spore Update

Still unsure on Spore, I think its more of a god/creator sim than it is an "evolution" sim, one day your dude can be walking around on 4 legs and then you can have a baby, give the new one wings and 2 legs and they can go flying off...

so though I try to keep the same basic design of my dudes, its more useful as a tool to create a bunch of crazy ( Read more... )

My little brother ripped out the engine for that game and has created his own underwater level. It's pretty ridiculous what he can do on a fuckin laptop.

So it sounds like Zero Punctuation hit the mark, then.

But I'm not surprised you're having fun with the creature creator (I would personally enjoy a pet Goatknight or two). Shame there isn't more to do with your products.

Yeah after spending more time at it, ZP was right at nearly all of it, the space version of it captured my attention for awhile, but it is repetitive and it feels like a $20 internet game that gets me obsessed for maybe a week before I drop it... it makes me want to go out and buy a real space strategy sim, every aspect of spore feels like that; its just a crappy, incomplete game, and all of the stages together doesnt feel like a whole game, just a lot of crappy ones.

And the creature creator (there are also building/spaceship/vehicle creators) do have the potential to be fun and interesting, and you can sorta share with people, but they dont have the kind of potential for sharing with friends that I had anticipated with, say, City of Heroes. But even that wouldve gotten old soon enough I think

Hey, you oughta try Myth II: Soulblighter. It's one of the games that put Bungie on the map. They made it in the late nineties and when it stopped selling, they turned it open-source. Fans are still patching, maintaining and modding it today.

It's a real-time strategy game, but there's no unit production, building construction or resource... seduction. Instead, you just start with a set amount of units and have to use them better than your opponent does. And they gain experience for kills which carries over from mission to mission in the campaign mode, so you'll actually start to care about your li'l guys. You can even name them.

I don't know if you can download it for free, but I believe there are a lot of copies floating around on the cheap. One of the guys on the Dark Castle forum hooked me up, and he's pretty active in the community so he might be able to get you a Windows version. Hopefully you'll still be able to play with us Macinfolk.

Oh, and did I mention that the dwarves throw molotov cocktails?

Oh and so I was reading reviews of other space strategy games and in one, the line that made me most excited to play it was intended as a problem, "Yes, the game can get bogged down under the weight of its own complexity"
