beer, crime and a new floor

So it's apparently the season for dudes to slaughter their families on my block. Last weekend was the dude down the block who shot his baby mama and little kids in the face. This weekend is the big manhunt for the dude a block or two over who killed his baby mama, their two year old, his other baby mama and their other two year old. Classy ( Read more... )

Does thinking that Madison is a shitty town mean relocating away of it, or just moving to a different bit?

I must say that I am surprised the neighborhood has gone sour; when (a thousand years ago) the girl I went out with in high school lived there it was reasonably nice. The sort of neighborhood where a guy crawling out a window meant "teenaged escapades", not "fleeing the scene".

Same question. Moving to a different neighborhood or moving out of Madison entirely? The latter would be sad, though I understand the former.

Apartment for now, the reason we were already on track to selling is that Leslie's postdoc is up in a year and a half, and we don't know where she'll be going for tenure track yet.

Given the current environment and the people your house will be marketed to, I'd say throw down some cheap carpet and get the place on the market like next month! I know it's always better to wait until spring to sell, but waiting doesn't seem like something to do at this time.

Sorry to hear that you're hating Madison. It is a pretty good plan to get the house on the market now since you may be moving to follow the PHD.

I like laminate better than carpet, but tagaboo has a good point.

Carpet. Quick and cheap. Wood or laminate in a basement is just asking for trouble.

I totally understand the disappointment of a neighborhood gone bad, Hell I still remember the cocaine deal gone bad that turned into a drug bust and my terminating my lease...
It sucks to be outclassed in your own home.
On the other hand.. if at some point you have to move anyway for tenure.... now might be the time to get out of the house.

Stay safe, both of you.

We had several shootings including a man walking into a bar and shooting a cop up here..
It used to be super bowl Sunday was the highest day of domestic violence. Guess people can't wait that long anymore.
It is a shame that it has to happen at all, and certainly it is heartbreaking to leave that cute house of yours.
