Humans tend to define reality by pain. Think about it. When something really good happens, what's a common phrase? "It was like a dream." Good is related to dreaming. If nothing was wrong what would be the purpose of peoples lives? There'd be nothing to strive for, to improve.

Oh yeah, I must go all Matrix-ey now. Remember the part where Agent Smith was telling Neo how the first Matrix was defined as a "perfect world" and thousands of humans died because they kept trying to "wake up'? Now I know it's just a movie, but The Matrix is based on many works of philosophy and psychology; Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, etc. If you think about it it makes sense...
