What shall we do with a drunken ...

HELP, PLEASE. I'm putting on a program for my residents tomorrow that allows them to talk about their experiences (or lack of experiences) with alcohol. One thing that seems to come up a lot is Alcohol Poisoning. What is it? What's it look like? What should you do? What shouldn't you do? How do you tell the difference between a person who's ( Read more... )

Alcohol poisoning feels like something is trying to claw its way out of your stomach. Throwing up usually follows, but your stomach can hurt for up to twelve hours afterwards. Sadly, I learned this the hard way. :| If it's alcohol poisoning due to a dodgy bit of beer, or drinking from an unclean glass, it usually doesn't kick in until a few hours later, but your body will let you know. Apart from throwing up and taking painkillers, there's little else to do. If it's dangerously bad, get over to the doctor immediately, as it can be sometimes fatal.

Well, if it is a low-grade alcohol poisoning... it's pretty much like any type of poisoning. You'll be sick and dizzy the next day (and maybe even a day or two). If it's a more serious case, such as a person completely losing consciousness and not responding... calling a doctor might be in order. (Sometimes, those can get serious)

My usual solution is - not pretty, but useful - taking said person to a bathroom and shoving your fingers down their throat to force a vomit reaction. Sometimes they need to throw up but the body isn't reaction on it's own, but they shouldn't be allowed to continue digesting what's in their stomach. (This, from having many friends with drinking problems while I was at Uni)

Hope this helps? :)

what would you do if someone at a party showed signs of alcohol poisoning?

I would not let them sleep. And call 911, getting someone else to keep an eye on them while calling 911. Erm. And try to get them to drink a little water? I can't remember if that's terrible or not, but as I can't remember I wouldn't. Should I ( ... )

Yours is by far the best advise! Move! Get them to a hospital. A life may hang in the balance! Sheesh! And drink responsibly, ffs!

One of the myths I've heard is that copious amounts of coffee will help with severe drunkeness.

I call bullshit on that though.

Make them eat something, if they can keep it down. Help them throw up if they need to. Keep them hydrated with water, and turn them on their side so they don't choke in puke. If they lose consciousness, take 'em to the ER.

That's all I've got.
