Swordfish

So some of my Black Tiger buddies are planning to enter this crazy European rapier/longsword/etc tournament in 2013. One of them called me to ask if I wanna join. Not an everyday activity. I youtubed some footage of the 2011 event. Not sure what I think. Same general setup as a sport karate tournament. Three minute rounds, four judges to call ( Read more... )

Interesting. About six months ago, duke Lucan formed a group that seems to be getting ready to do something similar on the heavy side. They are deep in training. Can you shoot me a you tube link? I would also be interested in your thoughts on lefties as cut and thrust attacks totally open up my leading leg without the corner of a bigger shield.

Lucan, Icefalcon, Uther, and Nissan are all doing battle of the nations, which is kinda like a crash derby. Swordfish is somewhat more tame. I will try and find some videos, but youtubing "swordfish fencing" usually does it. It looks like it might be fun, but not fly to sweden fun.

I'll gather my thoughts on c&t. Typically I do not have many leg shots thrown at me. My reach is probably too threatening. The shot I like most, and the only thing I add to my game for c&t is a chop to the sword arm, in the middle of their forearm. Being lefty on righty, that angle is usually open and the attack is very low cost. Our game is still very thrust enabled, so most cuts aren't cost effective save certain situations.

I went with "swordfish fencing video" and got right there.

No one seems to find my reach threatening. :-)

I see they kept going after weapons were lost and added grappling. Is there a point for forcing the opponent out of the list?

The longsword fight seems more elaborate than the others. More pushing and wrassling. I haven't found the exact rules yet, however.

I personally feel that we see more technique and skill ik the sca, but these swordfish people are in much better shape than the average scadian. I imagine a well practiced and experienced scadian in good physical condition would smoke this tourney, but you never know till you see it happen.

I know a lot of the guys involved with swordfish through research circles. They are good people. Have mixed feeling about the event though. There are people who show up and just hit as hard as they can and injure people. I was appalled at the injury report that went out this last time.

A lot of those same people gather at the event in Texas and have a tournament. They just finished their second year down there. If you wanted to get a feel for it without leaving the country I would probably start there.
