Just theorizing: because it (in our society) puts it in the girl's hands. She's not had time to be wooed, she will react like it's a (unexpected=often unwelcome) expectation or (worse) responsibility to from/to the boy. It's better to show her she likes you, and then let her know you like her. (This doesn't always work.) Maybe the trick is to let her know, if it's what you want, and then do that 'movie' move, where you tell her not to say anything, you don't want anything from her right now, you like her and will convince her, or whatever, and you just wanted her to know. Or something, thank god I'm not a boy. But they do it on tv and movies (where they have teams of writers) and it comes off really smooth. :P I bet if you hired a team of writers this would all be easier.
BUT, it IS easy. At college if I tell the girl that I have absolutly no intrest and couldn't see myself dating them, ever they start hitting on ME. If I say they're cute, fun, or in anyway indicate that I might actually LIKE to hang out with them they say screw that and run off.
I've tried both methods and saying get lost seems to be exactly what a girl wants to hear.
They aren't evil, just crazy. She wants not to have control over it. If you like her, she has to do something about it, or stop being around you (which equals the same thing). If you tell her you don't like her, she doesn't have control. If you tell her 'I like you, you will be won, and I don't want you to like me back right now anyway', it removes control from her, and she likes it. At least it's that way on tv, and if you can't trust tv, who can you trust?

I'd be cool if they just didn't like me back. I'm not in the least bit stalker-like I'll drop even the worst crush quickly if a girl says no. But this isn't just one freak girl that somehow doesn't like me. It's more of a general statement with several specific examples I can think of. And why is it that when I say there's no chance I would ever date them am I the one they suddenly want to hang out with? Another general statement with several specific examples.
