Darn, and here I was going to do a comprehensive search for a five-leaf clover! I must admit that I had no knee-jerk about hijabs until I read Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
I think everyone has racist thoughts. It may not be about the same race as the person next to you, but we all have these feelings, just sometimes we do a better job than others of telling our feelings to shut the heck up and allow our cognitive thought process to govern our behavior. And if we are wise, we try to grow, and to change and to label those feelings as fear - not fact. It's the people who never grow, who never say to themselves "I see that I react this way because of..., and that's not the reality now, so I need to change my reaction" that worry me.
