why do you think this is smart vs. just being desperate?

well, you're right, it's not so much "smart" from a governing perspective as it is a bit of desperately conniving electioneering ( ... )

don't forget she was the runner-up to Miss Alaska 1984! also the son who enlisted in the army on Sept 11th (last year but still) and a husband in alaskan oil who is a union member.

well, she's anti-choice, really bad on the environment, and has only two years of big-time experience. so- i think that only the dumbest of diehard clinton supporters could see her addition to the ticket as tempting. still need to learn more about her- but.

yes, fortunately! I think only the most spiteful 'democrats' (who are seeming more and more like undercover Republican operatives to me, honestly) would use the excuse of identity politics to vote for McCain/Palin.

still, I think she lends much more energy and glamour to the campaign than Romney would have, and the controversial pick is going to get a LOT of press, and steal some much needed post-DNC momentum from Obama. so that sucks.

No need to worry about the "glamour" points. I think Barack Obama has the monopoly on those as evidenced with his historic acceptance speech in front of a crowd last estimated at 84,000.

In all seriousness though, even with this pick -- which is clearly a tactical one rooted in elementary logic that is largely offensive to those voters on the margin -- this will not be enough for John McCain. At the end of the day, voters come out and vote for the person on top of the ticket. When it comes down to it, it's a battle between McCain and Obama -- VP picks will be long forgotten come November 4th.

Also, I don't think Palin's past is much of an asset for the campaign - more of a liability http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/8/29/112757/660.

Don't forget that this blows a huge hole in McCain's argument that Obama is "inexperienced." Ms. Palin has been governor of Alaska for less than two years. Before that, she was mayor of a town of less than 9,000 people, where, the Associated Press said, "the biggest civic worry is whether there will be enough snow for the Iditarod dog-mushing race." (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hpOJRFgwECJ6Eihl_U8bXx_ydPYQD92S2VB80) She has ZERO foreign policy experience, while Joe Biden has been a senator for 36 years.
I'm optimistic that voters will see how unprepared she is to be second-in-line to the presidency, especially considering McCain's age and the likelihood that she WILL be president if he's elected.
As for Hillary supporters, I'm also optimistic that they'll heed the Clintons' emphatic endorsement of Obama, and won't be swayed by an ultra-pro-life ex-beauty queen.

yeah, good call- i'm very excited at this pick taking the teeth out of one of the biggest republican tropes, that of the lack of experience!
