I bought my ticket to go see The Avengers on Friday. \o/
I'm really excited for this movie, but I must admit that I...don't actually know that much about it. /o\ I haven't read the comics, and up until a few days ago, Thor was the only lead up movie I'd seen. Which makes me feel like a bad fan. I mean, the trailers look good, and the non-spoilery

You shouldn't need any comics knowledge (I think Joss said he put in some nods here and there but that's it).
Iron Man is easily my favorite of the movies so far but seeing Captain America and Thor last summer is what finally propelled me into the fandom. I've read a bunch of Marvel comics since then* and read an awesome number of fics. So, I'm even more excited than I already would have been (though I'll probably be more nitpicky now which is the only downside).
*If you ever do want to read some comics and want recs/uploads (even if from a newbie like myself) I'd happily help. :D

That's good to know. It would be way too hard to actually familiarize myself with the comics in time anyway.
There seems to be a lot of Avengers fic out there, but I didn't want to read it without knowing the characters, so maybe after I actually see the movie, I will look through some of that. Whee!
Oh yeah, I might take you up on that sometime. Thanks!

I felt that way about fic too, not wanting to read any until knowing the characters (now I'm smacking myself for not getting into the comics earlier) but after I saw Captain America there was no holding me back from all that fic. It's too bad that all the movie-verse Avengers fic has probably been Jossed (and how excited am I that the Jossing is coming from actual Joss) but I'm sure it'll still read awesomely.
Of course. :D
