You all know that I don't normally do the "typical blog thing" in my journal, which is the primary reason that I don't write in it as much as I should. But, I'll occasionally run across a "meme" that's interesting enough to me that I find it worth doing. And, nyghtowl has brought me just that. "if you've ever looked at Lotus Notes, and found that you "hated" it, you should take a look at the newest release, version 8. I bet you won't hate it anymore."

I've been a IBM man ever since I got my first ThinkPad 600ein 2001, then ThinkPad T32, & ThinkPad T4,(Levono at this point) and Every Time I get get one of these beasts they send me the Lotus Suite / Smart Suite, WHY? WHY? WHY? See my lj or why I hate lotus :)

SmartSuite has been a dead product for a decade. But, for whatever reason, Lenovo keeps sending those disks out with new thinkpads. Damn thing doesn't even run on Vista (not that anything failing on Vista should surprise people by now). The Lotus people in Westford have been screaming at Lenovo for years now to stop sending those damn disks, and they won't listen.

However, if you want a *real* alternative to MS Office, you should look at Lotus Symphony. It's based on Open Office, and it covers the basic functions very, very well. http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.jspa

is it free ;) I have both open office and ms office on my Thinkpad... There are some things MS office does better that are not so obvious when you use Open office.
