pagans are stupid.

Can we talk about neo-Paganism? It's for boneheads. Given the history of the Christian church in America and Europe, I can certainly understand why people are looking for an alternative. But this "hey kids, lets go over to the old gravel quarry, dress up like druids and start a religion" crap is disheartening, to say the least. What is actually ( Read more... )

Pay attention to your prefix please. It's caled NEO-paganism for a reason. You have people calling themselves Retro-pagans, saying they are doing what their ancestors did thousands of years ago. I agree that they are speaking BS.
Yes, no one knows exactly what the ancient pagans were doing, but we do have records. Everything form the Eddas and sagas in Germanic paganism, as well as Tacitus' records and Grimm's Teutonic Mythology. A shit-load of stuff comes from the Greeks and Romans because they did write things down.
Yes, the Druid revival did start off as a joke an excuse for a few college kids to get out of going to chapel. But that led to actaully research into what druids actaully did. I think you should do some reasearch into the history of the pagan movement before you start accusing pagans of "not getting it right". That is all.

Some of you Big Pagan sisters do realize that many branches of neo-paganism are in the process of being created and it is that very reason that they go for it. Not being trapped in a static dogma, recognizing and celebrating the divine feminine and not being a part of a religion I do not believe in...well, not bad. I am more interested in creating something new than in living in the past. We can never really live as the ancient "pagans" did, because our lives and our world are different. BUt there is no shame or harm in taking some of our cues from the old ways. There are some fruitcakes out there, but there are just as many in any religion. And as to the D&D reference, that is just cheap. There are many, many people who take their search for a sane spirituality very seriously. You have a right to your opinion, and this is mine.

I think that the notion that all humans are the result of the same biological process except for one is pretty illogical. However, I do no think that anyone who belives otherwise is "stupid." That is where the issue of "faith" picks up, and where I exit. I think most pagans are doing a pretty good job of making up their religion as they go along since most of the ones i know seem to be pretty decent people. Arguing about religion is pointless. Beliefs can't be proven. You can worship your toe jam for all I care, as long as you aren't hurting anyone else, it's all good.

A deconstruction of the central theme of Christianity, which is the notion that christ was born of a virgin birth while the rest of us had a mommy and a daddy. I find that notion about as ridiculous as saying someone went their whole life without ever taking a shit. Once again, I don't feel anyone who believes otherwise is an idiot. The same goes for all religions. rinse and repeat.

Right. Well, actually a lot of Christian traditions and such might seem really weird and idiotic to non-christians. we're going around drinking this guy's blood and eating his flesh. We believe in loving our enemy and helping them out - even to help them hurt us, if that's what they want. We dunk ourselves in water.

Christiain, Pagan, Buddhist, Agnostic or whatever! Fine by me! But if you actually worship something that you've made up, shouldn't the fact that you made it up be the first clue that it DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST!!

In this case their trying to revive an older religion, but people have founded religions through so-called mystical experiences, errrrr hallucinations, for millenia. I'm not saying it's right or wrong that's just how they came to be. I'm sure if I'd met any of the ancient prophets for Christianity back in the day I'd say "you're a fucking crazy bastard with an overactive imagination!" But that's what I am: a Blasphemer.

except if you were back in the day... and those crazy prophets said something like... oh, i don't know, "in 20 years from now this carpenter and his wife are going to have a kid and flee to egypt" and that "their son will be called a Nazarene" and other stuff like "in a X years from now Y and Z will happen" and then it DID all happen, you might think it was more than imagination. Maybe, maybe not.
