Even the tools to make Java GUIs are tough. Seeing as how Java GUIs were my first experience with GUIs, I have to wonder if that's why I'm not into HCI instead...

That stuff makes me cry. Thank God for .NET.

Look for TableLayout. Its a really cool layout manager that works like HTML tables... its less annoying than, say, GridBag Layout. And .NET can eat my ass. Muhahahahaha.
