The life that I lead

Jul 03, 2006 05:56

So, I was sitting around playing video games yesterday (what a shock), hanging out with My house mates, and listening to tune-skis. And it hit me, surviving is really easy. I mean it's really easy. Right now I'm the most laid back I've ever been in my life, but I'm also completely self sufficient. I'm paying for everything that I'm using, I'm ( Read more... )

I'm somehow advantaged.

Yes. For you are a white male. This counts for a lot more than you'd think.
Also, you don't have to pay your loans off yet. And, you are currently living in a community that makes it really easy to survive. I'd argue that at least two things that are essential to surviving comfortably, a job and people to share a house with, have come from UPS. It gets harder once that community is scattered. Not to mention the fact that Tacoma is cheaper to live in than Seattle....
I could go on. But, suffice it to say that things might be different once you graduate, so enjoy what you have now.

I'm not going into debt. Ever. My parents planned ahead since before my birth for my college, and I will do the same for my children. I'm going to get flac for saying this, but bringing race and gender into this seems a little contrived. I believe than anyone, anyone at all, can survive with relative ease. It's all a matter of will.

Ouch. It always hurts me when people say things like that. To me, as with a lot of people of color, race is always an issue. I don't want it that way, I don't make it that way, it simply is. It's not as bad for me as for others because I can pass for white, but the fact is that I will always be a brown person. Every time someone looks at me, they'll wonder what I am. You can't just discard something like that.

It sucks that I can't explain it better than that, or get you to understand without pissing you off, so i'll just end it here and hope we can have a conversation about it some other time.

The other reason I think you aren't experiencing this hard/cruel life everyone likes to bitch about is becuase you're pretty independent. You don't have a wife or children or house payments (you pay rent but don't own a house) or anything like that to worry about. I think a lot of those people may be talking about life being hard when you have other people that you need to take care of. I would definately agree that living on your own when it's really just you you have to worry about is a piece of cake, especailly here where you can get a decent paying job that will cover rent, food, and all that. If you lived in a more expensive place, it would be a lot harder.

One word: children.

By far the quickest way to go into debt (save for college loans, but at least those you can defer) is to get yourself some kids.

So when (presumably) older people are talking about how hard life is, and how it's tough to make ends meet, they're really talking about what a financial drain children are.

Of course, these are usually the same people who'll say in a condescending manner intended to insult your limited life experience, "When [not IF] you have a family...."

Retirement. Want to work until you die?

I plan to have a job I really enjoy. I don't think I'm going to be happy with myself untill I have a job that I can say that about. I can't imagine not "doing" anything. Retirement doesn't really make sense to me in that respect. Alot of people right after they quit working deteriorate physically and mentally and get sent to nursing homes.

I thought it was you too. But it was pretty early, and I was pretty tired. In any case, I've seen the new Cath-22, and I can say that I don't much like them in concert. Street Light Manifest deffinitely got all the people that mattered.
