WHAT.

I just. It doesn't. Huh? How. WHY.

I've decided I'm just going to choose to believe that Smeyer is an evil genius who set out to mess with everyone. Because otherwise, you know, brain leakage and rage blackouts, etc.

One of my biggest issues with Meyer as a writer is how incredibly arrogant some of the things that come out of her mouth are. That's bad--really bad--but the one that nearly made me burst into flame was when she was in Entertainment Weekly saying, "Jane Eyre is like Bella." Not "Bella is like Jane Eyre." Jane Eyre is like Bella, like Bella was the first or the best. I just--rage. I can't even.

Rounding out the top three Worst Things I Have Ever Seen Her Say: in a book discussion on a message board--and I saw this with my own eyes--"Why is Edward right that Wuthering Heights is a terrible book?"

Jane Eyre is like Bella was literally my breaking point with Meyer. And I say this as someone who doesn't actually like Jane Eyre--as a character, the book as a whole has grown on me thanks to Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea because that story is more in tune with what happens when you hook up with a crazy control freak of a guy--but there's such arrogance to her take on her characters it just FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE.

And that's before I even get into the clusterfuck of the actual stories.

I know it's been years since the actual comments were made, but they still get me all riled up.

What in blue buggery FUCK. Miss Eyre will KICK YOUR PUNK ASS, MEYER.

"Why is Edward right?"
I... it doesn't... that sentence should not exist. Fatal logic error. Cannot brain.

What an insufferably self-satisfied titamaboob.

...

I had not read that before, and reading it now, I thought for sure someone was making fun of Bella's reaction in New Moon and the stuff SMeyer says about it.

Annnd then I read the rest of your comment, and my jaw literally dropped, like in the literal definition of literally, and stayed open for about a minute straight. So, you know...good job on that.

You know what really annoys me about that statement? The fact that she seems to not be able to fathom anyone not finding Edward Cullen to be as amazing and wonderful as she does. Maybe those other heroines didn't want an Edward Cullen. Do you think Scarlet O'Hara wanted an Edward?

Scarlett would've eaten Edward... um, alive?

Gone With the Wind and Vampires. :D It'd be a worthy addition to the series -- I mean, they've done sea monsters and zombies, yes?

But she did manage to use Wuthering Heights correctly! I mean, granted, it was for Edward to sniff over what a terrible book it was, but she didn't make the mistake of thinking that it was actual romance! She correctly called it "a hate story" and had Bella say that she was just as awful as Cathy!

I have to think that 1) someone suggested the names to her, snickering all the way; 2) she heard them somewhere and didn't know the context; 3) this is the greatest cosmic coincidence of all time.

Oh man, just the thought of possibility #1 has cheered me up. I would buy that person all the beers.

I don't even. I just... SM is like the person who ONLY read the Cliff's Notes or Wikipedia entry on something (at best,) and then tries to apply that information *as if* these thumbnail summaries make her a scholar.
I'm guessing the Quil/Clare, Clare Quilty thing is pure coincidence. (Albeit a hysterically funny one.) Comparing oneself or one's heroine, to either Bronte, is simply... unfettered, ignorant ego. Jane is NOTHING like Bella and vice versa, (in case it needed to be said,) while Bella may indeed share some of Cathy's worst character traits, the execution and import is in no way the same. GAWD, now I wanna smash something. I loathe Wuthering Heights in print, but SM's gonna criticize classic Lit by proxy? Dear jebus, the hubris knows no bounds.

I'm going to keep reading these comments but I do not think my brain can explode any more after the contents of this post and this thread.
