Comment cross-posting addendum

Okay, since I was having a hard time visualizing what the hell you would even want to use this for, the worst issues had to be explained to me. There were a couple of good comments explaining how cross-posting comments from LJ to Facebook or Twitter (even accidentally) could end badly ( Read more... )

livejournal, this is going to end well, bad ideas, for science!, twitter, facebook

From calcitrix on the news thread, here:

Am I right that if you turn on your Facebook connect, that on your LJ user profile, under External Services, it will show a little FB logo and your entire full (RL) name as a link to your FB profile? (Saw this on someone else's user profile).
I've just looked at your profile, and yes, it does appear to give your Facebook name, "Cleolinda Jones", under External Services.

So. Not. Good. 0_o

WHO THINKS THIS IS OKAY? GODDAMN. It's like the people who come up with this stuff are robots and don't have anything they don't want other people to know.

It's all about privilege, innit? They don't have to worry about being stalked/accidentally outed/whatever, so OF COURSE it's not a concern.

Not to generalize, but I wonder if there are any women at all among the people who come up with these ideas.

The sad thing? Probably. But they've never experienced it (we just went through a horrible situation with a meatspace friend of mine who was newly married and eight months pregnant and was subpoenaed to testify against her stalker -- and then he created several FB pages using her name and friending people she'd been connected to. God, what a mess) and so they just don't think about it.

But honestly -- they couldn't have learned from Blizzard?

Too right! I don't understand why they can't just beta test this stuff, or hold a poll on it in advance.

If you don't have Facebook connect (or if you don't have it turned ON), would it do that? Show your FB name on your LJ, I mean? *worries*

If you don't give it your own FB data, then no, that bit won't appear in your profile. But if other people have it turned on, such that they are crossposting comments in YOUR JOURNAL to THEIR FACEBOOK, it'll include a link back to your post/username, thus enabling people who are their FB friends to possibly determine who you (really) are.

No it won't. If you don't connect, it shouldn't show your FB name.

But for people who connected to FB and thought the connection was one-way (eg: they will show their journals on FB, but NOT their FB name on their journals), this will be a bad surprise.
