So, I am also teaching nursing students now. It is SUPER fun! I am teaching their very first lab as nursing students. It is sooo fun to watch them learn and grow. What are the nominal and practical differences between an RN and a nurse practitioner. I see references to both in print (job listings, educational programs, etc.), but still don't really have a handle on it.

Sounds like an NP has two years of extra school and a masters, based on your post. Do you pick a specific area of practice and specialize? Does the NP qualification equate to extra autonomy/authority in day-to-day work? (Seems like it doesn't equate to much in the way of extra money at present, again based on your post.)

Regarding NPs, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

As for the AMA and the economic underpinnings of the U.S. medical system, you've gotta wonder whether *anyone* can fix it at this point. Lot's of pretty proposals from the current crop of presidential candidates (some looking better than others, to me), but they're bound to run aground on the power of the various special interest groups - docs, insurance companies, etc. Sigh.
