Funding of a VM movie & why we don't support it

Greetings.

The mods of cloud_watchers felt like we should clarify our feelings about a new idea that seems to be picking up steam elsewhere in the internet VM community. Some diehard fans, who we're sure are sincere, would love to raise some money to help Rob Thomas create a movie version of VM. Figures like, 15 or so million dollars have been mentioned over ( Read more... )

Aside from the potential scamming... legally, no one can "donate" money to a commercial movie. It's a product that is being made for profit. Everyone who contributes financially to the film would have to be listed as "investors" or "partners" in the production, which would be a logistical and financial nightmare - especially if the film made money. $15 million is not a lot of money for a feature film. If Rob is serious about making the film, he is more than capable of raising the money on his own.

I made that point over at TWoP as well, regarding the legal implications and the fact that they'd essentially have to created a shareholder corporation to donate the funds. It's just a mess.
