Alright, so this lunch I had a very goo discussion with Justin, Natalie, and Rachel about oil, the planet's future, garbage, and other stuff too. The thing that we disagreed on most and peaked my interest the most was the garbage issue. I'm gonna try to give both sides as objectively as possible. Justin and I felt that, once it became ( Read more... )

Too... tired... anonymous June 2 2005, 00:19:25 UTC
I'm too tired to actually think about this in much depth but one thing that crossed my mind is that if we're sending matter out away from space - even if it's just trash - what if it becomes a problem in the sense that we're sending away... oh nevermind, I don't think it would be a problem ( ... )

I think i kind of side with the "its not our space" argument.. even though it makes sense to me that it probably wouldnt be hurting anyone, but it seems like in american history there have been a lot of times when we've used the same argument to dump waste into rivers and oceans, since that doesn't seem to directly affect anyone.. and look where that's gotten us.

err i don't know if that really made sense, but if it doesnt, tell me and ill try to explain again.

like.. what if eventually dumping into space causes some space-level envirospacial (haha) problem and comes back to nip us in the rear. Also theres the whole thing that since its OUR waste we should be responsible for it and blah blah yeah.

thats what i think i suppose. woo

OK, heres the thing. If we ever do manage to set up any kind of deep space mining operatons (out in the belt, or on the moon), we would never, and i mean NEVER have to worry about reasosrces again. Everything we need is out in spacein one form or another, and it just needs to be broken down or reconstructed to fit our needs. As for launching trash into space, well, thats why we need rail guns.

Ok, so I understand why you'd think sending all our garbage into space would sound like a good idea. But I have to disagree. No, I'm not going to say that it's not our space to be dumping in, but I still don't believe we should do it. I think we should be working towards reducing & recycling all our waste instead of finding a new place to dump it. And I can't help but feel that having that waste and garbage in space is a hazard, especially if some of it is radioactive. I don't know, I just feel that there's a chance that if that's there's radioactivity in space that it could find its way into our atmosphere and then cause major problems. But that's probably me just being over paranoid. Anyway, I think it's extremely important that we get to a place where we aren't using Earth's non-renewable resources and so creating more waste.

Ok, guys, heres something i think people might be missing here, or just forgetting. Space is HUGE. i mean, christ, we could fit another thousand earths into the space between here and mars and still have slent of room left over. People are assuming that the garbage would orbit earth, but it would be easy as pie to simly send it on a course parrallel to the solar eliptic plain that would remove it from any volume of space human craft might someday occupy.
