i got there at about 1 pm on thursday, and had absolutely no trouble getting in. there were volunteers being turned away, but my friends and i devised a plan. whenever someone stopped the car and asked where we were going, we said "we're with the gulf coast homeless coalition." everyone just waved us on through. we weren't put through a search or any sort of metal detector, which made me a little nervous. after we got into the dome, we asked around trying to find a volunteer coordinator. after we did, we were directed to the area where they were registering people. we had to walk around and find those that weren't wearing a pink wristband. once we found them, we had to get them completely registered. keep in mind, we went through perhaps a 10 minute training session on registering people. there just wasn't enough time for more. we had to find out if they needed any medical attention or counseling. most people said that they didn't need anything, but they also hadn't eaten in 3-4 days and were filthy. the

lauren thank you so much for sharing this. you are a truly amazing person. also, i read your friends list and was so happy to read about so many people helping out and volunteering their time and efforts, and some of my friends down there as well. it is hard for me to be so far away where i cannot volunteer, yet also having no money to donate (to the point of having to sell some things yesterday so i can hopefully pay my rent today--even that is going to be iffy). of course if i had anything at all to spare i would do it. i will when i can, after i get paid next. still, money helps but i am in awe of so many people everywhere who are actually going down there and doing something about it, even if only for a few hours. you are a perfect example of this and i hope you continue to share your stories.
