My dad was totally down with the idea of my co-sleeping with Bertie until he saw some program on TV (in America) where some doctor was all, "but if you roll on your kid, all it takes is a few seconds and they get brain damage!" and "and now he dead from smoosh!" My dad is really worried that I'm going to smoosh the baby. I think this is kind of ( Read more... )

The roll-over danger is real, but as long as you aren't drunk, high on drugs, taking meds that make you sleepy, and don't normally thrash around in your sleep then its really not such a big issue (IMHO). Co-sleeping is the norm in most cultures, and I think most moms are well aware of their baby right next to them even when sleeping.

I was co-sleeping with Jacen in the hospital, and a nurse criticized me for it. I was, obviously, rather annoyed but calmly told her that I had done it occasionally with my first son, and he was fine, and that I don't move around much in my sleep - esp with a little body next to me. What was really interesting though is that Colin was born in the same hospital, and the nurses encouraged me to co-sleep with him there because he was having a hard time keeping his body tempature regulated on his own.

I was told they'd take my first born back to the nursery if I continued to sleep with him in my bed. Even though she thought I shouldn't cosleep with him, she still just about ripped that nurse a new one in my defense.

I became hyper-aware after I got pregnant with my first and it never went away (alas, neither did my pregnancy sense of smell).

I hear it's more that kids get stuck between the bed and the wall because folks are afraid they'll roll off the edge than the nursing mom actually rolling over on their baby. you're fine.

I'm curious as to how we, as a species, managed to rear children before the invention of cribs and nurseries.
