Linux help needed

I've got a linux problem and I'm hoping one of you can give me some information. I have a friend who is trying to install Linux on his laptop but is having trouble finding a version that will work with his laptop (a Dell Lassitude X1). Can any of you recommend a version that he might be able to install with minimal difficulty? Alternatively do you ( Read more... )

Looks like people have successfully installed Fedora Core, Debian, Ubuntu, Mandriva, and Gentoo. I'd personally recommend trying Ubuntu from those. If it works (which it does on most systems) it should be about the easiest option available. If Ubuntu doesn't work I'd try Gentoo, since the gentoo documentation is always very good.

However, if he's likely to want to mess with anything, Ubuntu is a pain as it doesn't have root.

I don't think he wants to mess with anything, he just want to be able to use remote desktopping.
