Great chapter! Buffy's interior monologe is so revealing. And she just stumbled on a demon that terrifies her? What is this new thing?

Way to end on a cliffhanger too...

Buffy dwells and overthinks everything, and she makes everything a struggle without even realizing what she's doing. If only... :)

Really excellent chapter!! I love this view into Buffy's state of mind and I really feel badly for her that she can't (at least yet) seem to accept her real feelings for Spike. I LOVE that she finally refers to him as her best friend. Yes! And isn't THAT the right basis for building a strong romantic relationship, something she has never done before?

And I love the fight scenes and leading her into the darker areas! (although as soon as you said they were areas she's never felt the need to patrol before, I'm like, that's where the bug bad is!).

And it's Spike to the rescue!? I hope?

Yes! A friendship that strong, built on affection and trust and mutual attraction- naturally it's the perfect prelude to romance! Shame that Buffy hasn't figured that out yet... :)

Wonderful chapter!
And this:
There had been little she'd given her full attention to, those last months in Sunnydale, other than The First and her vampire companion. Maybe that had been why the potentials had hated her, why G-Giles hadn't had faith in her.
I think is a very honest way of describing her state of mind in those days--not that I think she was that disconnected: after all, it's them that cut her out of her own home while she was actually taking care of them and doing the right thing.

I agree, and I fault the Scoobies for it as well- though I don't think that Buffy has it in her not to take the burden of the blame on her shoulders.

I keep remembering those three juxtaposed images of Buffy ships- Buffy and Angel, arms wrapped around each other; Buffy and Riley, Riley's hands on her and her hands against herself; and Buffy and Spike, Buffy leaning backwards but never further than that (I have yet to find the original of that picture- and actually, looking more closely, it kind of looks like it's two pictures spliced together? but ANYWAY, it's still a good point because it's about how she can stand with him as her support, not losing herself in him but finding strength in herself through him...

...and yeah. I have a lot of feelings.

But you knew that already. ;D
