What is the meaning...in your opinion....of Jimi Hendrix' rendition of the Star Spangled Banner? Is it anti-American? Is it pro-American? Both? Is it a cry for help? Is it simply an attempt to push America to get with the times? What is your take on it? I was thinking about this because when I was back east on Thanksgiving, my dad asked me ( Read more... )

Your....dog asked you? Your throw pillow? Your life partner? Your disembodied conscience? ;-)

Hmm...well, I don't think it was an anti-American statement...maybe an anti-administration statement...a reclaiming of patriotism from the staunch, established patriarchy and redistributing it to the rabble-rousing protestors...my guess is he was saying "It's our anthem, too." Or even further, "It's truly OUR anthem, not yours."

"300" = new film based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller of "Sin City" fame (In case your question mark was indicating that you didn't know what I was talking about)....time to hit the IMDb ;)

I thinnk he was just high.

He probably walked off stage, some guy put a hand on his shoulder and said, "Jimmie, man that was a bad ass version of the Star-Spangled Banner," And Jimmie probably replied. "Star-Spangled Banner? I was trying to beat off the snakes on my leg."

Kidding. I love that version and just thought it was new way of seeing old concepts. A older generation than me showing me that they were cooler than their folks and confirming that I could be cooler than my folks too.

I don't think it's "Anti-American". I DO think it's "protest music"--It's Hendrix's sonic portrait of the Vietnam war (Filled with explosions and screaming and sirens, with the basic melody sometimes fighting to be heard over the din). As a musician, as an artist, it was his attempt to "bring the war home" in the best way he knew how.

That's probably exactly right... it portrays the war, and in a way asks "Is this what you want?"
