Um, this just occurred to me...

Derek - If the world in Firefly is supposed to be set in a time when the US and China became dominant superpowers, how come there are no Asian characters in the show? Seriously...

(note: technically, there is no US or China - they were the dominate powers back on Earth That Was leading up to the mass-exodus - on the "Arks" the races were all stuck together for a full generation and all cultures blurred a lot, so the lines between cultures and ethnicities are all much hazier)

Its because there are very few good/known asian actors I'm guessing and Joss couldn't find any that fit the characters during casting. This bugs me too. At least Simon and River are the Tams, suggesting that they have some Chinese heritage, but yeah, annoying.

Is Simon the one with the Elton John glasses?

One of the coolest things about the show was that it used a lot of rather unknown actors and actresses. Yeah, actors of the Jackie Chan/Jet Li mold wouldn't have been good for the show, but I think its a bit of a stretch to say there aren't any good Chinese actors available…
