Sci-Fi Movies

Someone at work yesterday asked me what my favorite Science Fiction movie was. I said Spaceballs. They were saying that it's not Sci-Fi, along with Star Wars. It's not based on scientific stuff. Spaceballs is based on Star Trek and Star Wars. It's based on something that's based on science. Yes it is a science fiction movie.

I'd file it under "comedy" rather than "sci-fi" - but I also wouldn't argue about it. It's both comedy and sci-fi.

And that crap about "not based on scientific stuff"... puh-leez.

Most sci-fi movies are about with Star Wars for plausibility. Most don't have anything resembling real science. Many sci-fi movies are merely using sci-fi stuff as props and window-dressing, not making it an integral part of the story.

Aliens - Bladerunner

Spaceballs == comedy mostly, but it's also about sci-fi.

Jurassic Park (the first one). At least that one's on the "could be possible in 10 to 15 years with the right research" mark on the plausibility scale. Although it's more horror/action then sci-fi. The book was scary too.

A.I. Nice attempt, but it's on the 100+ year mark on the ol' plausibility scale. Plus, at the end it got really weird. Animatronics are not quite there, and the computer tech is definitely not there.

Matrix (and the two sequels). Off the scale. The only plausible portion is that the AI goes bad. The Terminator and it's two sequels were closer. ( and they rocked, too) We are just now taking baby steps to figure out how to do direct nural stimulation, let alone get it to feel real.

Yes, I have far too much time on my hands.
