This morning I met my first batch of first graders. They were pretty good. A  few pests that I'll get under control pretty quick. I always forget how little they are in september though, doing watercolor on paper was like rocket science for them ( Read more... )

OMG, that is so funny about the little kid whacking it in class. I would have DIED. I giggle when my baby automatically reaches there when his diaper is off.

BTW-when is your due date?

Since all I do is ask for advice, I don't feel I should be dishy any out. Sounds like you need more furniture - STAT! That sucks! But, remember it's the amount...it's WHO is in that group of 34. So don't get lost in the number and do your past good lessons. I like her site. http://www.mrsbrownart.com/kindergarten.htm She doesn't really talk enough about how she does each lesson, but lots of inspiration.
Good luck tomorrow!

hopefully at least if i don't have to spend 10 minutes scrounging up chairs, that will help. I think i'm going to have to find a way to do a lot of pre-setting up for them until they are better at helping. Thanks for the link, going there right now to check it out!

Holy crap, how is that legal? I think our limit for K is 22, and we don't usually even get close to it. This year they're all 17-18. As for advice, um...start training them on your routines, hard! Once they're no longer wandering around like lost puppies they'll be much more manageable. And learn their names, so you can call them back all snappy-like.

I'm not really sure if it IS legal, but with the school closed and no extra rooms I guess it is ok for this year? We usually have like 22 here and THAT's a big class!

I'm going to start out with simpler stuff and do what you said, train them on cleaning, sitting, putting away, etc. and not go back to crazy talk like glue or paint for a few weeks. Next week I think we'll just make monsters like Where the Wild things are with crayons and practice coloring neatly. ha!

I have no idea how I will learn all their names though. Unless I assign seats and I feel like thats too much too soon!

No way, assign seats! My kids would fight like crazy over where they sit without assigned seats. I do have to call the kindergarteners table by table the first few weeks until they learn their seats, but hey, helps with the names. Can you ask their teacher to send them with nametags for a few weeks?

And agreed, no paint or glue for awhile, just lots and lots of following directions!
