I couldn't get into it either. For all of the colors, postmodernistic anarchronisms and quick pacing, I found it bland. Not bad, just not exciting to me.

Nicole Kidman in garters and black stockings counts as a plus, though.

I can't compete with one and two, as those are more personal to you than about the film.

Three, hmm. I thought it gave more to my opinion that it didn't seem to try hard enough. What's a Madonna song doing in a film that takes place in France in 1900? Or any of the other ones? I'm not looking for historical accuracy (though that would have been wonderful, but I am a history-lover as it is), but I'm looking for...something that's not tacky. I guess most people would find the more contemporary soundtrack amusing and hearing the familiar notes/words would open them up to the story, but it struck me as some sophomoric attempt to spruce up an otherwise bland story.

Four, once I realised the movie would be played out like a long and sporadically fast-forwarded music video, I was turned off. The colours were great, I'll give you that.

Five, I'll give, since I do love Ewan (number three on the list of why I had to go see Big FishA romance is easy to do, that's not hard to figure out for anyone into film and/or literature. A romance, ( ... )

Not if thaat technique is overused. I (probably) wouldn't watch a movie for swirls; I prefer substance.
