I am not sure why this came to mind, although at the time I was thinking of our Dad (of me and davesmusictank). It was something he used to say regularly, with a shrug of the shoulders if he was referring to something that meant nothing to him. He would say "san fairy ann". This was something that British soldiers picked up in France during the 2nd world war. ( Read more... )

My mother never said 'love a duck' but she did say, 'My giddy aunt' and 'it really is the giddy limit.' Times change.

I remember, ages ago, driving around Phoenix and coming across a store called Lawd Love A Duck! I stopped and went in and it was an importer of food and things British. Lovely little shop.

It's been gone for ages, but it was a nice place while it lasted.

You're quite welcome. I always look for such shops, best places to look for certain things like Jammy Dodgers, certain types of ginger creme cookies, etc. And just to browse interesting food items in general!

Thinking about it, it's quite possible that it's been a year since I've had a Jammy Dodger (or Tardis Destruction Remote!)

I loved the old fashioned food emporia as a kid. I used to shop for my mum on a Saturday at one such establishment in our village. Give your shopping list to an attendant behind the counter and he/she would get all the items and put them in your shopping bag. How times have changed!

Yes, I remember those phrases from our parents. I think mine would be intertwined with less polite interlocutions.
