I still allow everyone to comment but I turned captcha on today for non-friends in the hope that'll deter the bastards.

If that works at all it will only work for anonymous comments (and it hasn't worked for me, alas). It sounds as if Communicator is getting professions of love from real LJ accounts, albeit ones set up for the purpose. I've had a couple too, as of yesterday, but so far not a flood.
