Ingenuitea?

I'm thinking about purchasing the 16 oz. Ingenuitea looseleaf tea maker from Adagio, but I have two questions about it that hopefully one or many of you will be able to answer ( Read more... )

Well... can I be brutally honest? LOL! If you are using the microwave at any point with your tea or for boiling the water for your tea you are likely degrading the flavor so much right there that the plastic probably won't make a big difference. :-) As for the actual plastic, it's probably the "safe" real hard kind but it's still plastic and if you are sensitive to it it'll be niggling at the back of your mind... wash it real well a few times with boiling water to get any plastic smell residue off it.

There are 2 types of plastic in the ingenuitea. The body of the thing is hard plastic, not like tupperware, but I'm not sure what is safe vs unsafee plastic. The second is the filter which is a softer plastic. The rim of it kinda reminds me of tupperware plastic and then there is the mesh.

I've never used mine in the microwave. I always boil water in the kettle and then pour it into the ingenuitea.

I'll try to remember to measure mine tonight for you if no one else has by then.

.. Microwave for tea? You would likely be better off investing $10 in a cheap electric kettle to properly make your tea.

I would ask Adagio if they are microwave safe; I don't remember if it says anything about that on the site.

Also, I agree with the electric kettle idea for the water if you don't want to put a pot of water on the stove (or if you can't), that would work a lot better anyway, and you'd have more water to use and wouldn't have to keep using the microwave. I'd suggest checking out local thrift stores for electric kettles; I found one for 50 cents once. To test them before you buy, you could always fill them up a bit from the drinking fountain in the store, plug it in, and wait and see if the water gets hot. And then, of course, dump out the water. :)

Ditto on the electric kettle--Rival's hot pot is cheap and quick. It barely takes more time than the microwave.

Boiling water in the microwave can be dangerous--it won't look boiling but will boil up sometimes when you take out or add tea--in big overflowy bubbles. Even if you don't have a lot of living space, it's worth it. I had one in my dorm room in college and used it for any water-boiling needs.
