So yay. Those 2 Fort Worth officers behind the June 28 gay-bar raid and their supervisor have been fired (and 2 of their higher-ups given a slap on the wrist). It's bad enough that the raid was deliberately timed as a nose-thumbing gesture on the exact night of Stonewall's 40th anniversary, to show that yes police in America can still invade gay ( Read more... )

Non-Catholics would not be permitted to take communion. There's no exception for funerals or weddings or any other special occasion. Even Catholics who are not in a state of grace (ie, fasting and recent confession) are not supposed to partake. It's pretty common for a third of a church to remain seated during communion ( ... )

Interesting ... since May I've been songleading 4 masses a week at a Catholic church, and my observation is that nearly everyone there receives every time. Of course as a protestant I cannot, and I have lots of disagreements about this personally but put those aside when I'm there, cuz I'm really there to work. But privately, as a Christian who's received all my life, it smarts, esp. since I happen to believe in transubstantiation, not the symbolism belief of most protestants. Of course I haven't been to catechism class for a year and all that, and disagree with a few choice positions of the Catholic church. Then again, LOTS of Catholics who receive all the time disagree with those same positions. But they have the official blessing & keep quiet about the rest. Sorta ( ... )

Well, my experience is from the 70s/80s in NC and Iowa, things could easily have changed. But if you weren't fasting and recently confessed, you weren't supposed to partake. If you decided to become Catholic, they'd let you partake, but it's definitely one of the ways that Catholics say "us" vs "them".

Surprised and pleased to see you here! Hope everything is going well...

I did not watch the funeral but non Catholics are not permitted to receive communion at a Catholic service, funeral, or not. Pro-choice Catholics, who have been to Confession are able to receive communion. Teddy Kennedy, as a divorced are re-married Catholic, would not have been able to receive. Protestants, like Mr and Mrs Obama, are completely beyond the pale.

Yet Teddy apparently found plenty of priests willing to look the other way. I find the notion of withholding communion due to one's personal political beliefs, esp. in one's capacity of creating laws for a nation NOT comprised of only Catholics, to be incredibly elitist & presumptuous.

Oh, yeah, Catholics aren't supposed to receive if they're divorced / remarried - I forgot that one. I don't know if priests are strict about it, the way I know they are NOT strict about the political beliefs.
