Abby, I know you are grateful I took you in during a bitter cold winter and gave you a home. I know you are already very bonded to me and want to make me happy. I'm glad you finally feel like this is truly home.

But if I find one more freshly-killed rat at the foot of my bed, I will have a psychotic break.

George Michelle kills mice and leaves them for my mother to find. :)

HOWEVER, I came home the other today to her sitting on my bed next to a dying roach. Thanks, cat.

They are cruel. I think if Abby could, he might put a horse's head in my bed.

It's like saying "Here, that's what I give - a rat's ass."

Do you know what the sad thing is? Because he is a hunter I had to stop feeding the birds in my yard to save their tiny lives. :( I KNOW you will understand this loss, since you have beautiful birds around you. He is a very sweet and gentle cat but he hunts and wants to give me gifts. Sigh. I wish I knew his background. He came into my life in November. I don't remember if you saw the video I made of him or not but in case you didn't and if you want to it's here:

audio starts at about 45 seconds...

While I was last in the States I saw a pamphlet that pleaded for keeping cats permanently indoors as they, themselves, live longer and so do the millions of small birds they kill every year. It somehow goes against my ideas to do that, but yet, cats don't belong out in the natural world either.

I completely agree with you. My older cat is basically indoors. She goes out into the carport to lie in the sun for a few minutes and the comes in and she is always locked in at night. She never goes further than the carport. This new guy, however - I have no idea how long he was a homeless cat, although he looked well taken care of when he came to me. I try and lock him in, at least overnight, but if I don't let him out he has a ceaseless meow that won't let up and I get no sleep. Clearly he is used to being outside most of the day and night and I have had to learn detachment with him, since I don't know him. So far he has brought me three rodents and no birds, and I'm hoping it's because I'm not feeding them anymore. And while I hate that any living thing has to die, I guess dead rodents does help our city out. I've now closed the cat door and he has to ask to go in or out so I can monitor whether he has anything in his mouth ( ... )

Rat? Eeek. I got freaked out enough when I saw one of our cats in the throes of deathplay with a mouse in our upstairs bedroom, and then again on our porch...I can't imagine a rat -- they're so much bigger!! Eeek again.

I love rodents and hate to see them killed and all...but if our cats presented me with the fresh corpse of the squirrel that ate holes in my ceiling tiles, I think I'd probably reward them.

The rats we have here (I live near lots of fields) are the size of the rats you keep as household pets, not the ones you see running around in sewers on crime shows. ;) Still, they're not pretty and I don't want them dead - or alive - in my house! My solution now is to keep the cat door closed and monitor his comings and goings. I was doing that for a while but got lax - thus the gift in my bedroom.

I'm the opposite of you - while I don't hate rodents, I have no love for them but I'm very fond of all the squirrels around here. I'm praying he doesn't go after them.

In general, I like squirrels...I'm just feeling somewhat homicidal toward the invaders that are damaging my house!!

You should meet my cuddly guinea pigs. They're delightful little rodents. :)
