Holly does not know how to make a full-time living as a writer.

nooo! Holly, don't do it. You have too much experience for that, you don't need Demand Studios (or their ilk, Helium and the rest).

Do you have an absolute minimum amount of money you need to make freelancing? I think that's a good place to start. Then you can find opportunities that will help you meet that goal. I'm happy to help with brainstorming. FWIW I think online work IS the place to look right now, I just think DS and other sites like it are bad for writers and won't get you what you need.

Thank you, honestly it is validating to hear another writer who feels the way I do about Demand. I think they are taking advantage of writers and driving down the rates for all of us. It is tempting because it's quick cash, though.

At a bare minimum I need to make $1000 a month to replace my current income - if I could make $2000 a month I could actually stay in my current house AND pay my student loans, which is the real goal.

In your shoes I think I'd look into steady blogging gigs. They're becoming more and more common and you might earn anywhere from $25-$50 or more for a quickie post...no, it's not a ton, but there's not nearly as much research involved as there would be if you're researching a topic from scratch and you'd be able to become immersed in whatever your topic is so you'd be on top of news and trends. You could probably juggle a couple gigs like that because they are easy to knock out of the way in an hour a day ( ... )
