Holly, this is Gudrun. As a nursing school drop-out who only has her LPN, I've actually done more in care giving than I ever thought I could do. I got another degree with everything that transferred from my LPN/RN track and did substance abuse and detox and elder care. Instead of pressure and regretting your decision, is there a way you can dip a toe into this field first? Some people start with an LPN, like what they see, and make a great transition to RN. If you try a quarter, at least you'd have enough credits/exp to do something peripheral, like train into med recs or med office. It's hard when your "Don't Want To" list is bigger than the "I Want" list. Health care is a mixed bag, and IME so much depends on where you're working. 2 hospitals can = 2 very different cultures and expectations. Good luck in your decision. I hope you can weigh your pros and cons and find your answer.

Hi Gudrun! Jobs in the medical field are hard to get around here if you don't have experience OR education, though I am looking for something. I have decided that I am going to pursue this anyway. I am concerned that starting with an LPN would not give me the types of opportunities I'm seeking and that could increase the likelihood that I'd dislike the medical field. I've done a lot of research and although I know that's no substitution for actual hands-on work in the field, I am relieved by the fact that once I have the degree I can work in different aspects of nursing. I may have to start in a less desired aspect and wait to switch into something else.

Do you mind sharing why you dropped out of nursing school?
