Good Sir,

I argue it is Dante, if nothing else but for the expression of universal truths. And the imagery! Don't we all know a Ruggieri and Ugolino? (See Hell, Circle 9, Canto 33.)
What about Rabelias, Voltaire and Samuel Johnson?
