Say hello to Wimpy V2.0! (Or Wv2)
(Note that the GPU in the video has already been changed.)

Just a couple of things, because the content under the lj-cut is mostly specifications.

First. I'm... proud of what I have. My wishful thinking of Wimpy V2.0 began probably back in Tty's birthday last year when my brothers and I bought him a new computer, and we researched for parts. But my first evidence of thorough research started in April 19, 2019. I mentioned "a certain idea of a budget", so if money was involved, I was probably looking at PC Hub's price list as a cost reference and as major starting point. Wimpy V2.0 is the result of a lot of research on parts performance, compatibility and price, evaluation of my worth as a person (I'm half-serious), the garnering of courage from all cores of my being (I'm fully serious), and the kindness of my good friends.

Future planned upgrades would include a GPU support bracket (which kinds of holds the GPU so it doesn't bend the PCI slot due to gravity and weight), and an aftermarket CPU cooler. Doom 2016 is still the most resources-demanding game I have played so far, and has not pushed Wimpy's toll in terms of temperature. I did try to run simultaneous GPU and CPU stress tests, and, well, if I reach that kind of temperature I will definitely have to get the CPU Cooler.

Even more future plans would be to buy a computer chair, and either buy a computer table(?!) or modify my current one. Currently, Wv2 is on top of the table. For space on top of the table, I want to put it on the floor, or in a very low platform.

So... Below are the parts and any updates or changes, as compared to my previous write-up!

  • CPU - Ryzen 5 2600
    Condition: Second-hand. Three months old.
    Acquired as planned: Yes
    Price: Php7,200

I checked brand-new prices recently, and... apparently I could have saved Php400. But it's ok. Buying the CPU was a very important trigger in the pursuit of getting the rest of the parts.

  • GPU - Palit GTX 1070 Super Jetstream
Condition: Second-hand. About 1 and 2/3 years old
    As planned: Mostly yes
    Price: Php9,500

It is "mostly yes" because, although I did get my target GPU, this has been the trickiest and most evasive hardware to acquire. A lot of the good-priced GTX 1070s I see are either used for GPU mining, or was already gone from the market after a couple of days. The ad I saw was posted on late March 2019, and allegedly was "in pristine condition" because it was hardware abandoned from a computer shop that closed. And I was fortunate enough that the ad still existed.

The meetup was in SM Fairview, and there was a lot of planning and decision-making on my part. For example, I was deciding on bringing a car (more convenient, protects the GPU from theft or my own mishandling while in transit) or going there via commute (will not have to deal with traffic while driving, and cheaper due to commute costs versus gasoline costs.) I was also deciding on getting it during the weekdays (I did not need to spend a day just to leave the house) or during the weekend (no pressure in rushing to get back to work.) So I decided on a weekday commute.

It is performing fabulously, at 75 degrees Celsius on a GPU stress test for 30 minutes. It may go higher if I play CPU-intensive games - the stress test ran when the CPU was only at about 10-20% usage. If the CPU usage increases while the GPU usage is being maxed out, I will have to look at aftermarket CPU coolers to aid in temperatures not only for the CPU but for the overall case temperature (hence, the GPU temperature.)

As for the "excess" GTX 770 I got from Roel, well... I plan to sell it. Or give it away?

  • RAM - Adata Spectrix D41 3200mhz 2x8GB DDR4 RAM
    Condition: Brand new
As planned: No. I got a better deal!
    Price: Php4,600

So Roel accompanied me to buying the brand new hardware (I think this deserves a separate discussion), and thanks to his persistence I got a better deal - Php400 cheaper than my original target. And ahigher memory speeds too.

At home when I was opening the RAM boxes, I noticed some logos on the box. It had RGB lighting support. My RAM sticks have freaking RGP lighting! That was absolutely not planned. But that was a pleasant surprise.

  • Storage - 500gb Crucial P1 M.2 NVME SSD, and a 2tb Seagate Barracuda HDD
    Condition: Both brand new
As planned: Sort of. I got a more "aggressive" SSD with higher capacity
Price: Php2,999 (NVME SSD); Php3,110 (HDD)

I was torn between getting a normal SATA SSD and an M.2 NVME SSD. Also I was torn between 240gb and 480gb. Roel convinced me to get the 480gb M.2 NVME SSD because he believes that 240gb will get filled up pretty quickly. He may be right.

Also, Roel warned me that I will be spoiled after getting an NVME SSD because my computer will boot really fast. He was also right.

  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro Wifi
Condition: Second-hand. Less than a year old?
    As planned: Yes
Price: Php6,500 (along with other components of Roel's Package)

Nothing much to say. I still prefer a smaller case, hence a smaller motherboard. But I checked the brand new price of the motherboard, and it costs as much as the entire package he has given me. So... I suppose he wasn't kidding when he said that his main goal for selling his stuff is for disposal.

  • Power Supply - XFX 850w Power Supply (Bronze-rated)
Condition: Second-hand. Not sure of the exact age, but it's relatively old.
    As planned: Yes.
Price: Php6,500 (along with other components of Roel's Package)

Also nothing much to say. I hope it lasts a very long time!

    Oh oh oh!

  • Monitor - Samsung SyncMaster B2230 (HD resolution, at 60hz)
Condition: Second-hand. About seven years old.
As planned: No, I got something better.
    Price: Php0

    So here's a little story.

One day, Big Dix (Carl, Roel, Kyle and I) were having dinner. I mentioned the hardware setup of Wimpy V1.0, and also mentioned that I planned to buy a new desktop. Because my friends are awesome, Roel offered his package. And then Kyle offered to give away his monitor.

    For free.
    For freaking free.

There wasn't anything wrong with his monitor. He said that the DVI port of his video card had a problem (it only had a VGA port and a DVI port.) So he bought another monitor. I'm not sure exactly why he didn't decide to get a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor instead, though.

Oh, and he was fucking willing to bring it directly to our home. As in home delivery. My God. What an amazing friend.

Total cost? Php35,259.00. This does not yet include selling the GTX 770, but there is a chance that my supervisor will be inheriting it from me. He didn't coerce me to give it away. I actually offered him if he wanted to borrow it, while he's getting the budget for a desktop as well.
