ok, so, all I want to know is this: is there anyone else out there who really restricts what their kids get to see on tv? like, Noggin is ok but no Nickelodeon, because of the commercials? & maybe not so much of watching the shows with enormous commercial tie-ins, like Bob the Builder?

I mean, he's only two. is it so wrong of me to think that ( Read more... )

Dd watches Noggin only for tv, usually for no more than half an hour a day (sometimes more on weekends or sick days) and she has two short videos, and that's it. I feel like that is more than enough. And LOL, Dh and I argue about the value of Noggin even, cuz even though they don't run commercial advertising, they do advertise their own programming, and you know, that's just getting those kidlet's all primed for the commercial advertising they will eventually see. And I can totally await for my daughter's eventual development of consumerist expectations.

So, umm, imo, you are not weird.

my kids are 5 and 7 and still watch very little TV. what they do watch is usually PBS, and a tiny amount of Animal Planet, maybe an hour/week, but i get kind of uptight about all of the commercials. they see very few movies, and we FF through the five minutes of commercials (blech) at the begining of the videos.

marketing directed at children is one of my biggest pet peaves.

You aren't alone. I mean I'm toatally slack and let them watch just about any non-violent children't programming. But i'm on #2. With #1 I was a whole lot more conscientious, mostly videos, no more than an hour a day. I wish I till had those values... Now I just want quiet.

Oh wait I wouldn't let Grandma get Maggie a Nick Jr magazine subscription because it was all formula and antibiotic ads. See as long as it's easy to say no I have values!!

nope. not wierd. in the days before i had a spine (aka when i lived with my dad and let him control my life and the raising of my child) jake was allowed to watch whatever and lots of it. once i saw the light, i got hard. he can watch pbs (and lets face even they have commercials disguised as sponserships) and videos and a lot less of it. hmmph.
