Was re-eading Ellen Kushner's mannerpunk Swordspoint last night (wonderful book that ages well), and took to wondering how the characters in the book look. I like the old hardback cover of the windblown swordsman - who I'd always taken to be St Vier - but on rereading the book, I came to feel that Richard St Vier has a much more ( Read more... )

Wow! Very nice! The eyes are wonderful in particular. Love how you've drawn his hair, also. Are you working on a full length portrayal of St. Vier with sword in hand? Or in color, so we could see his violet-colored eyes? Fantastic job, regardless!

Hee. Thank you! ^__^

Actually, I'm thinking of doing head sketches for Alec, and the other Swordspoint characters. The full length portrayal of St Vier with sword sounds intriguing, but the old hardcover illustration really captured that already - or so I think. Not sure I can do it justice.

As for the coloring, I've tried to do something about his eyes. But it's difficult to color in Photoshop, what with the light penciling I did. I could try it by hand, but that means I'll have to ink it first - it's something I might do when I'm caught up on my worklist. ;)

If I were at home right now, this would be going to my computer. However, since I'm at work, it'll have to wait.

Really nice picture. I love it.

For future perusal, definitely. I save good fanart so I don't have to go tracking it down again later :)

I hadn't considered wallpaper, but I'm not so good at making it, either.

Oh MAN, he is gorgeous! I love his nose. And his eyes are lovely, very intimidating and engaging all at once. His eyebrows are wonderfully expressive. Just gorgeous.

I really like the way you put it, "intimidating and engaging all at once." That basically encapsulates St Vier for me. About the eyebrows, I had extreme fun feathering them in. *g*

Hehe, the eyes do seem to be the centerpiece. Which was what I felt too when I drew them. :) Thank you for the compliment!

Thanks! *g* I'm glad the portrait didn't come off as too off-character. It's difficult drawing book figures, since everyone has a different conception of them when reading.

He looks rather different than my sense of him, but your drawing has enough emotion to it that I found that irrelevant. There's a softness to the picture that I like, but you haven't overly feminized him and he's still haughty. I also really like the hair which I found evocative of heroes and atheletes on Greek vases. It's just really really nice. I hope we'll see more from you.

I had a difficult time translating my feel of him onto paper, but the right eye and eyebrow seemed to get some of what I feel to be his character across. Oh, I'm glad you liked the hair - it was the last thing drawn and took a few tries to get right. :)
