Was re-eading Ellen Kushner's mannerpunk Swordspoint last night (wonderful book that ages well), and took to wondering how the characters in the book look. I like the old hardback cover of the windblown swordsman - who I'd always taken to be St Vier - but on rereading the book, I came to feel that Richard St Vier has a much more ( Read more... )

Wow! I love the prettily pouting lips, and great nose.

I'm getting lots of comments on the nose, which surprises me. Maybe because it's drawn in a clean line, with a bit of a bump to it at the bridge that makes it stand out? And yes, I like the pouting lips too. *g*

This is a great picture of St. Vier. The eyes, hair, mouth and nose are perfect. Well, I guess what I mean is, the whole thing is great.

One question: what is 'mannerpunk'? I've not come across this term before.

Thank you! *g*

Oh, and 'mannerpunk' is basically a nod at the sci-fi genre of cyberpunk. Mannerpunk is used to describe fantasy books that deal with hierarchical society, and whose story revolves less around magic (is there even is any - most often not), and more around the byzantine maze of 'manners' and social intrigue. Thus, mannerpunk. :)

Hehe. =^__^=

Actually, this is the first thing I've drawn in...oh, about 5 years. Possibly more. After I got involved in fandom, I found writing a more engaging and simpler medium. But since I've discovered the potentials of Photoshop (and your manga coloring tutorial did a lot for that *g*), drawing is becoming attractive again.

It's good to know the old art skills aren't rusted. :)

That you were able to produce something so wonderful after not drawing for five years is incredible. That you produced it via Photoshop is unbelievable! It looks exactly like a fine drawing done in pencil. Really lovely work! More of the same would be greatly appreciated.

^_^ Actually, I did draw it by pencil. Then I scanned it and used Photoshop for contrast adjusting and to give it that old-manuscript coloring. Until I get that pen/tablet tininess was telling me about, I'll probably not be drawing on the computer. Because drawing by mouse results in a product that's worse than what I turned out when I was five. ^^;;

This is gorgeous. I'm new to the fandom *waves shyly* and I think I fell madly in love with this portrait before I'd even gotten too far into the book. I particularly like the curve of his shoulder and neck; barely hinted at, perhaps, but certainly enough to stir my imagination.

Thank you so much for telling me how much you liked it. And welcome to the fandom! And your comment on the curve of StVier's neck stirred my imagination and certainly my gratitude. *g*
