A Time for Smileys

Apr 17, 2007 19:16

I just deleted a big ol' rant about people who use way too many smileys on message boards and how appalling I find it to fill a post with smileys when referring to such a tragedy ( Read more... )

I caught the long version. I didn't think it was out of line.

I'm fairly numb about the VT situation. I don't know what to say about it, either.

But, back to the rant. I think some people (a lot of people?) don't know what to say but feel compelled to say something. "Notice me. I am sad about the tragedy."

YES. I get that impression a lot from others as well. And maybe it's just that I react differently from others. But sometimes I feel the over-the-top, OMG I'm so SAAAAD, it's so TRAAAAAGIC kinds of public posts to be attention-seeking. Is that the way you really talk? You know what I mean?

Honestly, it's only a handful of people at Interference I get that from, and they annoy me on a regular basis anyway, so this was just the time for me to finally rant about it.

I've been using smilies more often and I am not sure why. I'm not a smiley person normally but the past couple of posts in my LJ have smilies. Not weird ones - just " :) " or " :( ". I wonder if this is a virus I have caught off the internets and if I can possibly get rid of it.

I use the basic ones like that a lot. I use *g* for "grin" because I hate LOL.

I'm talking about these graphic ones that actually look like a little smiley face doing something like praying, or crying, or what have you.

I use them TONS when I post on that forum, but I'm usually talking about something silly and inconsequential. Not 30+ people dying. You know?

Speaking as someone who has never used an emoticon of any kind, I sympathize with your rant. And if I had used them, I would still sympathize.

There are times not to act as if you're functionally illiterate.

:applaud: (I couldn't resist)

I was just talking about this earlier today with Pla. The over-the-top cartoonish smilies especially annoyed me the most.

Yes, yes, and yes. And yes again. I just replied to Pla and said it's really just a handful of people on Interference who do this way too much, and it annoys me on a regular basis.

And see, a simple :applaud: is one thing. It's not like you said:

(applause smiley) OMG, you are soooooooooo right! (hug smiley) I can't understand why someone would post 3,647 smilies for such a horrible tragedy! (praying smiley) (crying smiley) (hug smiley again)

Haha, I was seriously considering to post something like that but I didn't want to push any buttons.

That prayer smilie needs to go away. There hasn't been one time I've seen it in use that it hasn't looked corny and annoying and over the top.
